Flying with your pens

  • Injectable medicine and unused syringes or pen needles can go in your carry-on, as long as they travel with the medicine. Tell the officer at the checkpoint.
  • Medically necessary liquids over 3.4 oz are allowed in carry-on bags; take them out for separate screening.
  • Freeze ice packs solid and declare them. TSA's own pages differ on partly melted packs, so solid is the safe choice.
  • Labels on your medicine are recommended, not required. Keep used needles in a sharps container or another hard container.
  • Keep pens in your carry-on rather than a checked bag, so they stay with you and never freeze, which ruins them.
