Peach and vanilla skyr smoothie with oats

A soft peach and vanilla smoothie with skyr and a few oats, about 400 ml and mild all the way through. A good one for a warm morning when a plate does not appeal.

What still needs a real kitchen
  • Confirm the peach skin blends fully in 1 minute
  • Confirm a 5 minute soak is enough for the oats

Ingredients for 1 serving

1 serving

Check off ingredients as you go.

Contains gluten, milk. Check the labels on packaged ingredients:

  • rolled oats. UK allergen law lists oats among the cereals containing gluten. If you avoid gluten, buy oats labelled gluten-free.

Cooking steps

  1. Pour the milk into the blender jug, add the oats and leave for 5 minutes to soften.

  2. Add the skyr, the sliced peach and the vanilla. There is no need to peel the peach; the blender takes care of the skin.

  3. Blend on high for about 1 minute, until smooth and the oats can no longer be felt.

  4. Pour into a glass. If the peach was not frozen, it will be cool rather than cold; chill the skyr and milk beforehand for a colder glass.

The useful detail

Flavour here depends almost entirely on the peach. A ripe one gives slightly at the stem and smells of peach; an underripe one tastes of nothing once blended. Out of season, frozen peach slices are the better choice.

Make it work for you

One serving is One glass, about 400 ml. You can switch to a smaller portion in the ingredients above; it is three quarters of this, and it contains correspondingly less energy and protein. It is an option, not a goal.

  • Frozen mango instead of peach

    Thicker, sweeter and more tropical.

Per serving: about 25 kcal more, about the same protein, about the same fat.

  • Ground almonds instead of oats

A little richer, and it does not need soaking.

Per serving: about 30 kcal more, about 1 g more protein, about 7 g more fat.

Allergens: Adds tree nuts (almonds). Removes the gluten risk that ordinary oats carry.

  • Fat-free Greek yoghurt instead of skyr

    Slightly looser and milder.

Per serving: about the same energy, about the same protein, about the same fat.

Estimated nutrition

Per standard serving, calculated from the ingredients above. Nutrition changes with substitutions, brands and how much oil stays in the pan.

The skyr carries nearly all of the protein. The peach and oats bring the fibre and the gentler sweetness; nothing sweet is added.

Storage and reheating

In the fridge
Best drunk straight away. If you keep it, cover it and refrigerate within 2 hours, and drink it within 24 hours; it separates, so shake or stir it first. The oats will thicken it; loosen it with a splash of milk.
Reheating
Not for reheating. Serve cold.

Checked against US Food and Drug Administration, Refrigerator and Freezer Storage Chart, USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service, Leftovers and Food Safety, FoodSafety.gov, Safe Minimum Internal Temperatures and FoodSafety.gov, Cold Food Storage Chart. UK guidance from the Food Standards Agency is shorter, at two days for most leftovers.
