High-protein pretzels and 20-gram soups: Philadelphia's food brands reformulate for GLP-1 shoppers

Philly Pretzel Factory, Campbell's and Honeygrow are rebuilding products around protein and fibre as GLP-1 use spreads. What the new labels are actually worth.

The supermarket is starting to rearrange itself around a very small appetite. On 22 July the Philadelphia Inquirer reported that several of the city's best known food brands are reformulating for GLP-1 shoppers, and the direction of travel says something useful about what a GLP-1 diet actually is. Not a restriction plan. A protection plan.

What happened

Olivia Prusky reported that Philly Pretzel Factory is in early development on a high-protein pretzel. Its standard soft pretzel already carries 12 grams of protein. Separately, the chain is moving to unbleached flour, removing potassium bromate and replacing whey with a plant protein.

Campbell's has launched five protein soups at 20 grams of protein per can, alongside protein-fortified Snyder's pretzel sticks at 6 grams a serving against 3 grams for the standard product. Honeygrow reports customers increasingly picking its whole-wheat noodles, which the chain lists at 17 grams of fibre and 13 grams of protein, built into customised, vegetable-forward bowls.

The commercial logic is plain. Roughly one in eight US adults currently uses a GLP-1 medicine, JPMorgan estimates up to 30 million US users by 2030, and households with a GLP-1 user cut annual grocery spending by about $390 within six months. When people eat less, the only way to keep a place in the basket is to make each bite carry more.

Read the aisle with one eyebrow raised

Ernest Baskin of St. Joseph's University offers the sensible caution: this is the same adaptation the industry made in the low-fat era, and again in the low-carb era. Front-of-pack claims follow demand, and demand moves on.

So use the number, not the badge. The word protein on the front of a pack is marketing. Twenty grams on the nutrition panel is information. Check whether the figure is per serving or per pack, because that is where these claims usually thin out.

What it means for you

This is the part worth carrying to the shops. On a GLP-1, the medicine has already done the restricting. Appetite is quiet, portions shrink on their own, and the real risk is no longer eating too much. It is eating too little of what you cannot afford to lose. A quarter to a third of the weight lost on these drugs can be lean mass unless protein and resistance training protect it.

Seen that way, a reformulated aisle is genuinely useful. A 20-gram can of soup on a day when nothing appeals is a real result, not a compromise. So is a noodle bowl that brings fibre with it, because constipation is among the most common complaints on these medicines.

Two rules keep it simple. Judge a product on protein and fibre per serving. And spend a small appetite on what holds muscle, hair and energy steady. For more, see how much protein you actually need on a GLP-1 and what to eat on Ozempic.

What to do with this

Reformulated products are only useful against a target. The calculator gives you one, in grams, from your own body weight and dose.

People also ask
Are food brands reformulating products for GLP-1 users?
Yes. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported on 22 July 2026 that several of the city's best known food brands are rebuilding products around protein and fibre. Philly Pretzel Factory is in early development on a high protein pretzel, its standard soft pretzel already carrying 12 grams of protein, and is separately moving to unbleached flour, removing potassium bromate and replacing whey with a plant protein. Campbell's and Honeygrow are moving the same way.
What does the reformulation trend say about eating on a GLP-1?
That the supermarket has finally understood what the medicine actually changes. When appetite switches off, the question stops being how little you can eat and becomes how much protein and fibre you can fit into a very small day. A GLP-1 diet is not a restriction plan, it is a protection plan, and the aisle is starting to help.
